Badass Ravi Kumar Movie Review  However, the burden of carrying the film by two newcomers becomes a bit much, and this reflects in the execution. Set in British India, the plot revolves around Govind (Aaman Devgan), a stable hand working for Rai Bahadur (Piyush Mishra), a local Zamindar aligned with the British. Govind becomes enchanted by Azaad, a formidable stallion owned by Vikram Singh (Ajay Devgn), a rebel opposing British rule. After Vikram's death, Govind inherits the responsibility of caring for Azaad. As Govind integrates the stallion into his life, tensions escalate when Rai Bahadur's men demand the horse’s surrender, leading to a climactic horse-riding challenge at the Ardh Kumbh fair.

Despite a fairly linear and average plot, the film manages to hold interest. The presence of Ajay Devgn and the build-up to the storyline keep you engaged in the first half, but it isn’t until the second half that ‘Azaad’ finds its stride, culminating in a climax reminiscent of ‘Lagaan,’ though in a diluted form. ‘Azaad’ distinguishes itself by placing a stallion at the heart of its narrative—a refreshing choice after a long time. The film features a thrilling horse-riding sequence during its climax, enhanced by excellent cinematography and Amit Trivedi's commendable music. However, the script lacks substantial tension between its protagonist and antagonist, with conflict only sporadically interspersed.

Ajay Devgn shines as Vikram Singh, delivering a convincing portrayal of a rebel leader. Similarly, Mohit Malik’s depiction of Tej Bahadur, the Zamindar's son, impresses with his menacing demeanour. Aaman Devgn and Rasha Thadani’s sincere efforts are evident, but a period film required more from them. There is clear potential for improvement. Diana Penty, as Kesar, delivers a sincere performance, adding depth to the supporting cast. Yet the true standout is Azaad, the stallion, whose presence commands the screen. Amit Trivedi, after a long gap, has delivered some commendable scores.

Despite sparks of excitement, ‘Azaad’ struggles to maintain consistent tension. The film underutilizes the potential of depicting the British officers' brutality, which could have heightened audience investment in Govind’s climactic horse-riding challenge. Director Abhishek Kapoor's restrained approach results in a film that feels partially realized, missing its full potential. While ‘Azaad’ has moments of grandeur, it is overshadowed by an overall lack of emotional and narrative payoff. It is a grand spectacle with noble intentions but leaves a muted impression.

Barroz Movie Review:  When an actor of Mohanlal's experience and mettle announces his directorial debut, expectations are always sky high. Barroz is not a disappointing film if you keep aside the expectation of a legendary actor being an equally able director.

The film has everything that can charm children. It primarily caters to the younger audience for sure, be it plot or the fantastical world built around it. There is the mysterious titular Barroz, played by Mohanlal himself; then there is Voodoo, more for the comic effect and assisting Barroz in his task than anything else; and the heir of the 13th generation of Portuguese explorer Da Gama's family, Isa Ron, played by Maya Rao West, who also doubles as Isabella da Gama. Mohanlal has, as always, tried to shoulder the film as an actor too. However, the remaining casting choices of the film remain a mystery.

The plot of the film revolves around the genie-like Barroz, who was once a Malabari slave working for Da Gama, guarding the treasures of the family and waiting to hand it over to his heir. It is based on the novel 'Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasures' by Jijo Punnoose.

The film is visually appealing, and the artwork by Santosh Raman is top-notch, with the settings inside the cellar under the mansion seeming very real and grounded in the 1600s. The flashback scenes have their ups and downs, but they more or less seem more enticing than the modern-day timeline. The music again was just fine, and the score by Mark Killian matched the rhythm of the film. The costumes worked in places but seemed off in certain parts, especially in the song sequence where Barroz recalls days with young Isabella.

From dialogues to dubbing choices—especially the Malayalam accent for some characters—would make one wonder about how informed these choices were. Half of the cast could have easily been chosen from the ample talent in Malayalam cinema, and a bit more effort could have been invested in casting the Europeans. When the African origin occultist tries to be mysterious, it almost looks like a blooper that made it into the film. The hand movements, actions, etc., seemed so out of place and comical to an extent.

There is definitely tons of effort put into the film, be it CGI, cinematography, art, songs, etc. However, whether it is enough for the film to click with the audience is a big question.

Ghajini Movie Review: Aamir Khan always knew the importance of being earnest, ever since his Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak days. Taare Zameen Par saw his zeal taking on new colours. The actor not only made his directorial debut with the film, but also displayed a newfound desire to dabble with meaningful cinema, after attaining a career-high in regular mainstream glitz. With Ghajini, he once again does a U-turn. He waltzes back to the no-holds-barred formula, once again. And he does it with the same earnestness with which he made a Ghulam, a Sarfarosh. Of course, his wounded, battered, bicep-laden, revenge-thirsty Sanjay Singhania of Ghajini is a much more mature and masterly rendition of the familiar action hero of mainstream masala.

The high point of Ghajini is Aamir Khan's class act of the hero who switches from a shy, taciturn tycoon who finds love in the alley -- with an ekdum ordinary girl -- to a vulnerable killing machine who mauls his prey like a wounded tiger. Roars and grunts, included! Aamir has hardly anything to say in the entire film. And yet, he speaks volumes -- with his silences, his expressions, his body language, his helplessness, his guttural, anguished shrieks and then his vacant stare again. A man who suffers from short term memory loss must not only remember the horror of his past, but seek out his beloved's (Asin) killers too and finish them off. Even though, he might just forget what he's doing while battering them. All he has to help him in his mission are a few scrawls on his body, his walls, his unfinished diaries, his polaroid snapshots, his fading memory cells and a friendly medical student (Jiah Khan). Not much to go by, specially when the bad guys (Pradeep Rawat and co.) choose to erase most of the clues, including his tattoos.

Director  : S. Shankar

Indian 2 Movie Review: In the original Indian, a freedom fighter turns vigilante when he suffers a personal loss due to corruption and realises how it's eroding the very nation that he sought to protect. And when he realises there might be a weed in his own home, in the form of his corrupt son, he decides to kill him and make it an example for others.

In this sequel, director Shankar explores the fallout that could happen if the character urges everyone in the country to clean up their homes in his footsteps. It's a premise filled with dramatic potential, especially given the changes that have seen in the intervening years. When the first Indian came out, it was just a year ahead of the 50th year of the Indian independence and the country had just begun to move towards a liberalist economic policy, and putting nation first was still considered a virtue. But now, nationalism has come to mean something totally different, and social media has made it possible to paint villains as heroes and vice versa. So, it's interesting to explore if Senapathi would still be a revered figure, and if he might be called Anti-Indian.

However, Shankar goes about this exploration not with nuance but with excesses and caricatures that seem excessive even for a filmmaker like him who has always dealt with his subjects in the broadest of strokes. The story begins with a team of YouTubers led by Siddharth's Chitra Aravindan coming across several instances of corruption and beginning a social media campaign in the hope that it brings Indian thatha back. And it works, with Senapathi, who's now living as a martial arts guru in Taiwan, returns to the country to continue his battle against corruption.

He urges youngsters across the country to expose even their close ones, if they learn that they are corrupt. Shankar shows us the personal experiences that befall the youngsters, including Chitra Aravindan, who chose this idealistic path, while in parallel, gives us scenes of the vigilante dispensing his style of justice to corrupt rich men through the the martial art form Varma. But when Chitra Aravindan's crusade results in a personal tragedy, he blames Senapathi for it and worse, turns him into a hateful figure. Meanwhile, the investigating officers who are after the freedom fighter are closing in. Can Indian thatha evade capture?

The problem with Indian 2 is that it is filled with writing that lacks nuance and characters who are caricatures. Even in terms of scenes, all the visual excesses that Shankar throws at them - grand sets, visual effects, and frames filled with people - hardly touch us as there's no emotional connect. In the original, everything was tied to Senapathi's personal struggles. Here, his crusade feels empty, and more importantly, the character's dignity goes for a toss. We begin to question why he decides to fight now after remaining silent over the corruption that has spread and metamorphosised into something monstrous during all these years.

The filmmaking also proves that it is perhaps time for reinvention from one of the trendsetting filmmakers who once frequently pushed the boundaries of our big-budget cinema. For here, Shankar often seems to be banking on tropes and visual cliches from his previous films. There are even call-backs to some of the moments from his earlier works that rather than feel cool leave us cringing. Even the action set pieces, while having distinct elements - a zero-gravity setting, a chase in which Senapathi is on a unicycle - hardly provide an adrenaline rush as they go on and on (perhaps due to the decision to release the film in two parts). It is left to Anirudh, who vainly tries to inject some energy into these portions.

Kamal Haasan, too, does his bit of heavy lifting, including going shirtless for a stunt scene, in a role that has scope only for prosthetic makeup and not performance.

It is only when the film explores the personal stakes that we care about it and realise what it could have been. We wish there had been more of scenes like the one in which Chitra Aravindan has to expose his father and suffers a loss due to his action. Perhaps, it would have been effective if the narrative had been a contained one, focusing strictly on this conflict, instead of being expansive in an effort to go pan-Indian.

Rebel Moon Movie Review:Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire has garnered a mix of reactions from audiences and critics. Intended as Netflix's answer to epic sci-fi franchises like Star Wars, the movie features stunning visuals and dynamic action sequences but falls short in its storytelling and character depth.

The plot revolves around Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former warrior who assembles a band of misfits to defend her peaceful colony from a tyrannical empire called the Motherworld. While the concept is engaging, many reviewers found the narrative derivative, heavily borrowing from classics like Seven Samurai and Star Wars. The story primarily serves as a setup for future installments, leaving this entry feeling incomplete and lacking a standalone impact

Critics praised the cinematography and production design, emphasizing Snyder's flair for creating visually immersive worlds. However, overuse of slow-motion sequences and a muted color palette divided opinions on the film's aesthetics. Performances from the cast, including Sofia Boutella and Charlie Hunnam, were described as serviceable but failed to elevate the underdeveloped script

While fans of Zack Snyder's work might appreciate the film's scale and ambition, casual viewers may find it overly familiar and narratively thin. The sequel, Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver, is expected to delve deeper into the story

Saltburn Movie Review: When Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) gets into Oxford University, he wants nothing more than to get close to the enchanting and irresistible Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). The problem is, so does everyone else. With a dogged determination, Oliver works his way into Felix’s life and home, where he encounters a group of elite people whose entitlement knows no bounds. Now, he must adapt or be cast out from the life he craves.
‘Saltburn’, written and directed by Emerald Fennell, weaves a tangled tale of intrigue and complexity. She presents a multifaceted exploration of relationships and societal norms set against the backdrop of an enigmatic English town. The mostly unpredictable plot revolves around eccentric characters, each portrayed with depth and nuance. Barry Keoghan's performance is particularly notable as he brings a raw intensity to his role that demands attention. Jacob Elordi, as the carefree Felix, complements this with a more subdued yet equally compelling portrayal. Veterans Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant are surprisingly disarming in their respective roles, adding a dark blend of irony with spades of peculiarities courtesy of their privilege.

The cinematography uses the unique textures of English architecture and landscapes to mirror the characters' emotional turmoil. The screenplay, co-written by Fennell, is often sharp, witty, and often painfully poignant. The dialogue is crafted with care, allowing each character's voice to be distinct and authentic. This is complemented by a haunting and evocative score, further enhancing the film's atmospheric quality. However, ‘Saltburn’ is not without its flaws. Sometimes, the narrative pacing seems uneven, and specific plot points feel underdeveloped. This can leave the viewer wanting more from certain aspects of the story, particularly in exploring the characters' backstories.

‘Saltburn’ is a showcase of Fennell's directorial prowess and her ability to tell stories that are both engaging and delightfully twisted. But the performances by Keoghan and Elordi bring this complex narrative to life. Barry Keoghan, in particular, continues to prove that he’s one of the most exciting talents on screen right now, with this brave and bold performance to add another memorable entry to his already impressive filmography.
