The Idea of You moive review : Based on Robinne Lee’s book ‘The Idea of You’, the romantic drama goes beyond the fairytale notion of forbidden love to give you a real picture. Wide age-gap couples often draw unsolicited opinions and social media only worsens the situation. The toxicity of age-related prejudice and judgement is directed at both men and women (Leonardo DiCaprio for instance) but opinions get uglier if women are older. Be it Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas or Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, women are at the receiving end of the hatred and slander, even more if they aren’t famous. You can be 40 and yet clueless.
The Idea of You’s feminism and social awareness is important but ill placed. The narrative feels confused between its desire to be a feel-good love story or a complex drama on ageism and toxicity of the internet. It handles the latter half better as the love story lacks heft and chemistry between the leads. What begins as a physical attraction progresses to emotional investment but that doesn’t come across as much as it should. Female desire finds an outlet, but the crusade overrides the love story, the latter being poorly established. The film gets its cause right, not the story as much.
Anne Hathaway’s Modern Love track, where she essays a bipolar character who is unable to come to terms with her reality was testament to her excellence as an actor. Her ability to express Solene’s sudden outburst of her deeply hidden vulnerabilities and people-pleasing past lends the film its most powerful scenes. Her romance with Nicholas Galitzine, however, feels far-fetched and ineffective. The mother-daughter bond and trust issues of Solene are well explored.

The Idea of You is much more than Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles fan fiction. It’s courageous and realistic in its decision to address the relevant but complicated issues in a relationship. The spark is what is missing.
