Night Swim Movie Review:The Waller family – Ray (Wyatt Russell), Eve (Kerry Condon), Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle), and Elliot (Gavin Warren), are on the lookout for a new place to live. Ray was a successful baseball player, but he’s retired after suffering an illness and now needs a walking stick. When he comes across a house on sale with a
backyard pool, it’s a steal, and the family quickly settles for it. Ray begins his water therapy, which seems to be working. But the four of them soon realise that the pool isn’t a safe place for them to be.
Set against the backdrop of a family's struggle with illness and the supernatural, ‘Night Swim’ attempts to intertwine themes of sacrifice, grief, and the unseen horrors lurking beneath the surface of everyday life. However, writer and director Bryce McGuire falls short in penning a compelling screenplay and its execution. The narrative, which starts with a
promising prologue, quickly loses momentum as it shifts to the present day. Wyatt Russell, portraying the ailing former baseball player Ray Waller and Kerry Condon as his wife Eve, do bring some depth to their roles. However, their performances are hindered by a script that lacks finesse, especially with the dramatic elements. This detracts from the emotional impact of the family's ordeal.
One of the film's critical flaws is its pacing, especially with an uneven build-up of tension and dread. The cinematography does not consistently support the film's tone. The
underwater sequences, intended to be claustrophobic and panic-inducing, are often more disorienting than scary. This visual inconsistency further dilutes the film's impact. The film's climax, intended to be both heart-wrenching and terrifying, feels like a rushed attempt to tie up loose ends rather than a meaningful conclusion to the story. Despite all attempts by the cast to salvage it, ‘Night Swim’ squanders any potential to be compelling and emotionally resonant but fails to engage or terrify due to its
