Showtime Movie Rebiew : Meet Raghu Khanna (Emraan Hashmi) - a brash, entitled and foul-mouthed heir apparent of Viktroy studios - a legacy brand started by Viktor Khanna (Naseerudddin Shah), who doesn’t see eye to eye with Raghu on filmmaking and the movie business. Their studio has weathered many storms but under Raghu, it’s slated for doom. Just then a young reporter Mahika Nandy (Mahima Makwana), who trashes their new film, catches Viktor’s attention. What happens next changes the course of their lives, forever.

It’s a show full of guilty pleasures indulging in every cliche imaginable. From temperamental aging superstars, who have lost touch with reality to sexy item girls, who are seen as gold-diggers and are often struggling to make their mark as actresses. And from south sensations whose sudden superstardom is an enigma to the Hindi film industry to a young journalist, who wants to uphold the integrity of her work at any cost. Directors Mihir Desai and Archit Kumar borrow heavily from real to reel, but also go for an over-the-top and loud treatment. Subtlety has no place here. From the very first episode, you can tell who is each character modeled after, on screen. The focus remains on showing the audience Bollywood’s dark side but there’s nothing we don’t already know about. It’s still snackable even when you know that many cliches have been force-fitted into the plot, just to capture the essence of the industry. While the inclusion of celebrity cameos such as Janhvi Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur adds star power, they contribute little to the storyline. The raging battle for supremacy between Raghu and Mahika is the highlight of the show and it drives the narrative forward.

Emraan Hashmi delivers a compelling portrayal of the brash heir, reminiscent of his performance in ‘The Dirty Picture.’ And it’s always good to see him as the arrogant bad boy than a goody-two-shoes softie. Mahima Makwana seizes the opportunity to perform, as she quickly switches from a righteous girl-next-door to an assertive boss lady. Mouni Roy once again gets the raw end of the stick, portraying a character that she’s struggling hard to break free from in real life. Rajeev Khandelwal is a hoot playing the obnoxious superstar Armaan Singh, who has outlived his stardom but continues to throw tantrums. Shriya Saran’s character of a scheming Mandira adds little value. Thanks to the way his character is written, Naseeruddin Shah's potential remains woefully underutilised. As the show progresses, it tries to cover more uncomfortable topics and situations inspired from the dark underbelly of the entertainment world. However, the execution never lifts beyond scraping the surface and lacks depth consistently. But with all its cliches in place, it does provide popcorn entertainment that has a certain voyeuristic pleasure, replete with cuss words and shady characters.

Overall, ‘Showtime comes across as more caricaturish than serious, lacking the depth to delve into Bollywood's hidden intricacies. Instead of offering a nuanced exploration of industry secrets, it opts for a surface-level approach with lazy writing, resulting in a mildly entertaining yet ultimately forgettable experience.
