3 Body Problem Movie Review: '3 Body Problem' is based on Chinese sci-fi author Liu Cixin's 2008 novel of the same name and is part of his trilogy, Remembrance of Earth's Past. The creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B.Weiss along with True Blood's Alexander Woo come together to bring the English live-action adaptation of the book ( a Chinese adaptation has already been released in 2023). Mostly owing to the book's very complex layers and dimensions that bring together a fascinating blend of Chinese history, VR gaming, astrophysics and alien life, it had often been deemed unadaptable to a visual medium.

The series travels through two main timelines, it begins in 1960s China, during the Maoist Revolution where Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng), an astrophysicist watches her father, a physics academic, being brutally murdered by the revolutionaries. Though Ye Wenjie escapes the Cultural Revolution's clamp down on intellectuals and academicians, she is enlisted into the military and sent to a secret radar base, owing to her scientific knowledge. Back in the present day, detective Da Shi (Benedict Wong) is investigating mysterious deaths of scientists, who seem to be taking their lives in the most gory ways.

When another eminent scientist, Vera Ye (Vedette Lim) also inexplicably takes her life, it brings five of her former students from Oxford back together - physicist Jin (Jess Hong), nano-technology expert Augustine (Eliza Gonzalez), physics teacher Will (Alex Sharp), snack magnate Jack (John Bradely) and Vera's research assistant, Saul (Jovan Adepo). While they are still mourning Vera's death, Jin and Jack get increasingly drawn to a VR game that she was playing around the time she took her life. Intriguingly this game with very advanced technology, difficult levels and interface, would take the human race at least a few more decades to develop. And Da Shi also gets his hands on it as another scientist who takes his life, seemed to be hooked on to it too. Simultaneously Augustine begins to see a countdown that is visible only to her along with threats to stop her groundbreaking work in nano tech. Back in the other timeline, a disillusioned Ye Wenjie is seen responding to frequencies from an alien planet, asking them to come and take over the human race, as she has lost all hope. Thereby putting the entire planet and future generations at threat.

The premise of '3 Body Problem' makes it instantly compelling, ominous and mind-bending. The production designs and vfx, especially inside the game, are larger than life and jaw-dropping. Add to that, the setting and action, which though violent and gruesome at times is well choreographed. Clearly displaying that the show's production values are on a massive scale. The narrative, however, deviates from the book as it shifts the action to the UK from China and also in developing the five central characters, each of whom in their own way contribute to unraveling the mystery and prepare for an alien invasion. It throws open moral and ethical debates between them and about the workings of the human race. There is an interesting parallel drawn between humans and aliens where power is depicted - the blind reverence to a higher force, the ruthlessness that comes along with this ultimate power as ones who no longer serve the purpose are quickly dispensed. There's also a reference to the looming climate change depicted in an alternate universe. However the complex narrative is at times diluted and the pace slackens as it spends considerable time on the equation between the five friends and on the romances added to mix. Among the performances, Rosalind Chao as the older Ye Winjie, Johnathan Pryce as oil tycoon Chris Evans, Liam Cummingham as Da Shi's boss, Benedict Wong and Zine Tseng stand out.

If one is a sci-fi fan '3 Body Problems' should definitely be added to one's watchlist. And for those who haven't read the source material, it opens up an intriguing, foreboding and multi-layered world of interstellar wars, fantasy and spectacle. Although season one leaves some unanswered questions, perhaps laying ground for the next season.
