Glass Onion Movie Review: What does it feel like to be miserable in paradise? If you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms post The White Lotus season 2 set in Sicily, Glass Onion acts as the perfect remedy. From one creepy holiday to another, both unravel at exotic sea-side locations and closely observe rich people with ambiguous intent and suspicious behaviour. Mysterious deaths lie at the bottom of both the plots so let the holidays begin!
Glass Onion revolves around Miles’ close circle of friends comprising Youtuber (Dave Bautista), governor (Kathryn Hahn), has-been model (Kate Hudson), scientist (Leslie Odom Jr.) and disgruntled tech founder (Janelle Monáe). Each has a bone to pick with Miles and thus a motive to kill him. Who's the killer? Director Rian Johnson returns after the terrific ‘Knives Out’ (2019) to serve you yet another clever murder mystery with fun twists and sharp satire. The film relies on comedy a tad more than the previous film. The humour tones down the tension a bit but the story doesn’t lose its grip whatsoever.
Edward Norton’s Miles Bron comes across as a parody of Elon Musk and Norton exudes the reckless overconfidence of ‘rich shitheads’ perfectly. One can think of Mark Zuckerberg as well. This is perhaps the biggest takeaway from Glass Onion — its fearless critique of the elite, who think they are ‘disruptors’. Norton opting for a character like Miles also reminds you of Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading… leading faces shedding vanity. Relevant to current times, Johnson’s sharp-witted writing highlights the need for those in powerful positions to be more responsible and mindful of their actions and words. “People often mistake speaking without thought as speaking the truth”, says Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc to one of the rich brats on the island.
Special cameo by Serena Williams and mention of a few others (Jared Leto and Jesse Eisenberg) add to the comic element. Not to forget Hugh Grant, who is suggested to be the partner of Benoit Blanc. Speaking of Blanc, Daniel Craig’s second outing as the famed detective is as effective as the first. Be it the suave James Bond or the nerdy yet deceitful Benoit, Craig can emerge from the sea sensually in swimming shorts and he can solve a good murder case.
While the ensemble cast and story keeps you on your toes throughout, you miss the classic mounting of a mystery (Agatha Christie-esque) of Knives Out. Glass Onion’s stronger desire to be a satire on Musk and social media, releases the unnerving tension between people and their hidden motives. The character building, drama and storytelling of Knives Out were top notch. Glass Onion isn’t as lavish or tricky but it is definitely twisty and makes for an entertaining watch.
